India got a tough start in the Thomas Cup 2026 Semifinals as Ayush Shetty lost in straight games against France’s Christo Popov. Losing the first match puts India down 1-0 on Saturday. 20-year-old Ayush Shetty, who is sitting in for Lakshya Sen who is injured, had a tough time as world number four Popov right from the start of the match took the lead and won the match 21-11, 21-9 in 39 minutes.

Ayush Shetty vs Christo Popov: Match Analysis
This match is Ayush’s second against Popov, as in 2024, Ayush also lost to Popov in the Hylo Open. This match also proved to be too strong for the Indian National player, as Popov’s experience and excellent court vision dominated the match once again.
An excellent start from the French shuttler saw a deep and accurate return. Popov was quick to bring Ayush from one corner to the other. In doing this, Ayush showed patience to some degree but after a series of unforced errors, Popov took control even further by leading.

The second game followed the same pattern as the first. From the start, Popov was in command and was winning the plays at the net. At this time, Ayush did struggle a little with some hesitancy, but was having trouble countering his opponent’s moves. Popov was hitting to Ayush’s backhand side, and Popov made some good errors with some backhand moves. Popov easily dominated the entire match.

With the current score being 0-1, India now focuses on all the remaining matches in the tie.
The second singles match is being played by former world ranked no. 1, Kidambi Srikanth, ranked 30, and France’s Alex Lanier.
